Fast CGI

 

TechNote: Fast CGI with 4D

Web sites often need to include functionality provided by external applications. The two most common ways to integrate Web servers and external programs are CGI and server-specific APIs. CGI programs are flexible and language independent but can also become performance bottlenecks. Server specific APIs, like ISAPI for IIS, NSAPI for SunOne (Netscape), and WSAPI for WebSTAR offer better performance than external CGI programs but bind programs tightly to a specific server. FastCGI is designed to avoid the performance problems of CGI programs and the restrictiveness of writing to a specific Web server's API. FastCGI programs can be written in any language, including 4D. The benefits of FastCGI are summarized below:

• Language Independence.
  FastCGI programs can be written in C, Perl, 4D, PHP, or any other language.
• Server Independence.
  FastCGI programs can be called by any major Web server on any platform.
• Machine Independence.
  FastCGI programs can reside on any machine on the network. Different FastCGI programs can run on different machines for highly distributed processing.
• Increased Performance.
  FastCGI programs can be written to persist and use multiple processes. This feature enables FastCGI programs to cache data, pool database connections, and eliminate the high process/program startup costs associated with CGI programs.

The 4D FastCGI 2003 component enables 4D, 4D Client, or 4D Server to receive and respond to FastCGI requests. This document explains how to install, configure, and use the component. (Quelle: 4D Knowledgebase #29729)
